The main areas in town that cater to the artist community are going to be near downtown. The prime spot you should be looking at is the 4th Ave area that technically encompasses the West University area, the Ironhorse neighborhood, and the Dunbar Springs neighborhood. There is also the area south of downtown which goes to about 22nd St and includes the Old Spanish Barrio. There is a small area east of Euclid/Park between Broadway and 22nd that has some artsy sections but stops at about Tucson Blvd. Sam Hughes used to have some artsier people but the high price of real estate means it is much more money making professionals with families now.
Also, there has been a recent (last 5 years) trend by realtors to convert some of the artists places into high priced houses and lofts. This is similar to what happened to Soho a few decades ago and what has been happening to Harlem in the last few years. 4th Ave area remains the most immune from this but you can see its effects in the Ice House Lofts, the Academy Lofts, and the housing development just west of 3rd Ave and south of Broadway.
